Undescribed species have higher extinction risk than known species

چکیده
Newly discovered species are often threatened with extinction but in many cases have received limited conservation effort. To guide future conservation, it is important to determine the risk of newly described species. Here, we test how time since formal description a linked its threat status obtain better insight into possible and as yet undescribed We compiled IUCN Red List data for 53,808 from five vertebrate groups 1758. Extinction more recently has increased significantly over time; proportion among 11.9% between 1758 1767 30.0% those 2011 2020. Based on projections our analysis, this could further increase 47.1% by 2050. The pattern consistent across taxonomic biomes. Current rates estimated all known therefore highly likely be underestimated. Intensive fieldwork boost discovery new immediate action species, especially tropical areas, urgently required.

Sexually dimorphic swallows have higher extinction risk
The effect of sexual selection on extinction risk remains unclear. In theory, sexual selection can lead to both increase and decrease extinction probability depending on the ecology of the study system. Thus, combining different groups might obscure patterns that can be found in groups that share similar ecological features. Using phylogenetic comparative analysis, we studied sexual plumage dim...
متن کاملAre We Underestimating Species Extinction Risk?
July 2005 | Volume 3 | Issue 7 | e259 | e244 Cell membranes are largely made of proteins, and membrane proteins account for about a third of all genes. Despite their importance, they are devilishly hard to isolate and stabilize, and therefore are hard to study. The problem lies in their structure: membrane proteins have at least one hydrophobic domain, composed of a stretch of waterrepelling am...
متن کاملPredicting extinction risk in declining species.
What biological attributes predispose species to the risk of extinction? There are many hypotheses but so far there has been no systematic analysis for discriminating between them. Using complete phylogenies of contemporary carnivores and primates, we present, to our knowledge, the first comparative test showing that high trophic level, low population density slow life history and, in particula...
متن کاملIncorporating explicit geospatial data shows more species at risk of extinction than the current Red List
The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List classifies species according to their risk of extinction, informing global to local conservation decisions. Unfortunately, important geospatial data do not explicitly or efficiently enter this process. Rapid growth in the availability of remotely sensed observations provides fine-scale data on elevation and increasingly sophisti...
متن کاملQuantification of extinction risk: IUCN's system for classifying threatened species.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species was increasingly used during the 1980s to assess the conservation status of species for policy and planning purposes. This use stimulated the development of a new set of quantitative criteria for listing species in the categories of threat: critically endangered, endangered, and vulnerable. These criteria, ...
